Who Are You?

Have you ever asked yourself, “Who am I? If you are like me, you’ve asked yourself this question a time or a thousand. This is not a one and done kind of question. No, it is meant to be reflected upon over and over again as you discover yourself anew. It’s the curiosity of how my perception has shifted that has me answering this question over and over again.

The answers are found not in the roles we play, but in the roots growing deeply into our core. That which twines throughout our being and manifests in how we act. It’s from our roots that the evolution of our answer flows!

How do we discover the me in the moment?

Breath Deep of Your Essence

This is more than a physical breath. It is moving past the barriers, the illusions, the stuff of who you are not into seeing who you are — the bright and the shadows. You do not have to like what is exposed. It is in the owning of who you are that opens you to growth.

Breathe deep of this essence. Notice the fear and the joy that rides on the breath of this acknowledgement. Awaken the courage to be the you that grows from the roots twining into your core.

Awaken the Courage at Your Core

Life is filled with this incredible kaleidoscope of emotions. Some uplift; others have you running for the nearest refuge. All these emotions are unapologetically you. You can bask in the joy, the happy, the wonder. You can run from that which scares us. What I have realized is that no matter how long, no matter how fast I run, I cannot give my shadow the slip. It paces me.

In time, you either meet your shadow with courage or it wears your down. I, for one, would like to meet my shadow with courage because far too many times it has worn me into fatigue. Take a deep breath of courage, enter the shadow, and look into the eyes of fear. This is the way of through. On this journey you discover the wonder of who you are.

Share Your Wonder with the World

Fears confronted, name one thing that is your wonder. It can be anything about you — small, huge, somewhere in-between. Decide how you will share this wonder with the world. Don’t discount any action, word, or thought that changes you for the better — they are all part of the sharing. For those things light your courage and gainssss the potential to transform both you and the world as you know it.

Breathe deep of your essence, awaken the courage at your core, share you wonder with the world. That is all. That is your enough.

Through the Veil into Your Truth

Slip into the veil. The between place where the magic of transformation occurs. Slip into the veil where dreams are made real. Slip into the veil where you find your truth.

Many spiritual traditions speak of this in-between place. In the liminal, our awareness shifts. We see, we experience the world differently. Things are brighter, more poignant. That more is our intuition. When we listen intently with all of our senses, we hear the voice of our intuition guiding us to our truth.

To seek this in-between place is to commit to change. To believe in magic. To live in mystery. To let go. To free fall into the moment trusting that the answers that you seek are within reach. Did I mention one little thing? Oh, yeah, you have to have the courage to take those running steps that end in a leap into the unknown.

Once you take that leap and slip through the thin opening, I believe you will find a certain familiarity — a trust that while you may not be home — you are exactly where you need to be. Enter the veil enough and you will discover the home of your heart.

Maybe you are wondering what you will find when you slip through that thin slot. Entering the veil, you begin the journey to the center of your being. At the core you become one with the flickering spark that connects you to those liminal spaces.

I began my journeying into the veil accidentally through meditation. Breathing into the rhythm of my being, I visualized my breath flowing through my being. Traveling on the breath’s flow, I found my sacred spark. What is this spark? A place of multiple portals, a connector to this moment and to liminal spaces beyond. The spark is home to my truth. A place where I embrace who I am.  But, I am getting ahead of myself.

I rested in the spark. Took a look around. Asked it to light the way of the next steps. This way into the liminal works best if you have a question. Then I continued to breath into the spark to the rhythm of my inhale and exhale. And, I listen to the whispered message.

Sometimes I would be invited through the veil to explore. Other times my being was soothed by the iridescence in the spark. No matter where I found myself in the liminal, I returned feeling peacefully energized. And, upon each return, I saw the world differently. I realized in those moments I did not go through the veil, the veil went through me.

Let’s return to the spark and the invitation of the liminal. I heard the voice of the liminal with all my senses. I entered it. Allowed it to enter me. Listened to the message. Deciphered it. Then holding my knowing gently, I returned better for the experience.

The veil, the liminal space, a place of transformation. Do you have the hope, the trust, the courage to make the round trip journey? To discover your truth and bring it back? When you do, you, and the world, will be made better because of it.

Resolution Free Zone

Darkness drapes me in her fragrant embrace. My heart beats wildly. What lurks in the dark? And, is something slithering across me or is it the breeze blowing through the cracks in my soul? I do not know.

The tempo of my heart increases. Instead of being carried into the place of fear, I remind myself to breathe: Inhale. Listen. Exhale. Let go. Reminding myself that I am safe, I inhale and exhale over and over again until I connect to the courage sparking from my soul.

Today as I celebrate the winter solstice, I find myself wanting to leap across this dark chasm into 2021…perhaps I will forego the winter and land smack dab in the middle of March. Three months into 2021, the dark will be no longer and the tiny stems of my being will be preparing to shoot from the ground of my being into the newness of me.

Then logic, and the fact that I do not own a time machine, kick in. I must live through the dark carefully sifting through what seeds to nurture and which to toss into the compost pile. This next year, 2021, is unlike any other (but aren’t they all?). This is the big 6-0 for me. I find myself reflecting upon how I want to nurture myself into being over the next nine months. This is not so much a resolution for me but a commitment to living from my core.

A commitment from the core. What does that even mean? And, how is it different from a New Year’s resolution? For me, this commitment is a call to look past the superficials like “I want to lose weight” or “I want to exercise more” to how I really need to live. So I dig furrows into the whys of the change I need to plant within my soul.

This change means letting go of habits that no longer serve me (us). The reason why we develop those habits we yearn to restructure is a complex one for sure. I am not a therapist who can unravel the reason or reasons why habits develop and are sustained. Instead, I am a mentor who can pose questions, listen to your responses, and help you become your best self. Evolving into your best self means working with those slithering things in the dark and navigating the dark with your intuition. (This year I am going to be my best client!)

So, how de we get to our best self? Let me share one of my favorite, most powerful tools: journaling. I am a big journaler. As I write, the emotions that I experience leach from my pen onto the paper. As the page fills, I empty myself until I am objective enough to really look at the events unfolding in my life. This means that I am less attached to my reactions, more aware of my judgments, and not so defensive about what I am writing about. In my objectivity I can see clearly see my triggers and the resulting implosions. I learn how to navigate the minefield of triggers. It is in this navigation that I shift happens and become the real me.

By journaling, I own who I am even when I slip and fall. After I acknowledge my imperfections, I breathe deeply into the calm. The whispers of self-compassion caress my woundedness. I commit to a somatic memory the feelings that led up to that flipped trigger. I immerse myself in self care/self-compassion/self love.

After my journal processing, I re-enter my life with a new awareness. I attend to my body, mind, and heart alert to what tatters the the threads of my spirit. These spirit threads weave through my body, mind, and heart connecting all four aspects of self. Those spirit threads are what makes me real. (They makes you real, too.) Once real, I can make choices to neutralize any triggers and be myself regardless of what slithers in the dark or reflects brightly in the light.

Unfortunately, this commitment to being me isn’t lived on a straight line from now to then. I am quite sure that the next nine months or so will see a detour or twelve. But, this year, I will not have resolutions. I am committed to planting me deep within the dark, fertile soil of my soul and attending to the whispers of dark that slither within me making room for me to grow.

How about you? How do you become objective about your life? What are you committing to in 2021?
