Who is right?

How was your January? Now that we are moving though the beginning of February, that question has come up a lot. More than one person told me “it was the longest ‘year’ they had been through in a while.” I smiled. Year, not month.

The opposite was true for me. As I wrote my daily reflection arcs and posted them to Facebook, the month flew by! Now we are in February which seems to be zipping by, too.

Who is right? The Other? Me? Neither? Both? It depends upon your perception. An awareness of the way we see the world. Lately, I’ve been realizing how fluid the world is. How it is changing constantly. As things change, the way we see the world shift. I have been trying to shift my perception, to inject a little fluidity into it.

How do you see the world? Have you ever really thought about your perception versus the ways that others see the world? Some things to reflect upon to gain a greater understanding of how you see the world:

  • Do you seen life in the big picture, the details, or a combination? What does that look like for you?
  • It life literal or figurative for you? How does that present itself?
  • Is life static — you get what you get — or do you reframe?
  • In this moment how do you see yourself and your interactions in the wider world?

These are just beginning ponderings. Perhaps they will provide greater clarity. Don’t feel like you need to know the answers to each questions. Our perceptions shifts as we transform. Sit with the questions. Allow the answers to percolate up inside you.  Spend time in reflection. Open yourself to an epiphany of meaning.

How was your January? As you answer that question look for shifts in how you see this moment knowing that your moment flows into the hours that become days that become weeks that become months that become years that become your life.

Life is a Journey (or maybe a highway!)

Life is a journey or maybe a series of journeys and way stations. Sometimes I am excited to be on this stretch of life-way; other times not so much.

Journeys can be well thought out, planned. We know when they begin and exactly where they end. We know how we are getting from point A to point Z. Other times the journey is more uncertain. We take that first step not even aware that we are beginning a trek. Only later do we realize where we are.

Even if we do not recognize it, each journey has a pivotal moment of beginning.  That moment could have happened with a seemingly inconsequential decision. This beginning altered life in phenomenal, far-reaching ways. Each step on this journey comes with the opportunity to make a radical shift in your life.

Journeys offer a wealth of new possibilities. We may begin eager to make changes, to shift the paths trajectory, and find a part of our self that we’ve never lost. As we edge deeper into the journey, perhaps the enthusiasm wanes until each step becomes less a foray into adventure and more of a lackluster attempt to sustain a path that just isn’t working for us.

We may find our self buried in the necessities of the daily and forget to revel in the joy, the wild tenderness, the fierce beauty of each moment. In unfolding, we don’t take time to celebrate the twists and turns and dips of the path.

Do we end the journey? Maybe. But maybe not. It might not be the journey that has us stuck but the illusion of what we should be experiencing. As we shift our awareness to the moment, what we experience changes. We consciously the next step. In doing so, we discover the slightest nuances of joy and curiosity and rightness.

This journey is unfolding, evolving. It invites us into courageous curiosity. We may not know where we walk or even when our steps draw us onto a different fork. Newness, oldness, the destination isn’t what is important; it is the journey…each intentional step.

I invite you to embrace the wonder of this life. Live with curious abandonment. Know that this journey leads us exactly where we need to be. Enjoy the twists and turns, the joys and curiosity, the being on your journey.

A Tale of Two Cats: Chaos & Change

Scattered meows heard
here & there when herding cats
best to be aware

My life passed in a haze as a pair of cats traipsed through my days. The pairs’ names was Chaos and Change.

Everywhere that I looked those recalcitrant cats slinked — in my life, in the lives of friends, throughout the world. Dancing to a frenzied tune they resisted any attempts to control or re-direct. So caught in the upheaval of these mischievous cats, I could not see the opportunities waiting to shift my perspective.

Finally I focused on that tiny whisper riding on the purrs of Chaos and Change. I heard the words of Pema Chödrön, “You can see the world as an unfolding of opportunities or just a series of raw deals.” An aha! An epiphany! Change and Chaos are opportunity!

Opportunity is an effervescent sparks that dances through everything. When I see possibility, I realize that while I can’t herd those cats; maybe, just maybe, I can change my perception of the cats and see them as opportunities to grow, to heal, to be peace.

I enter into my quiet and calm myself. In this place of peace, I invite the energy of possibility to suffuse me. I feel her ruffling breeze, and am drawn deep into her roots. I ask myself, what is causing my resistance to seeing opportunity instead of chaos. The answer is simple. Triggers.

As I expose my triggers, I gained a new perspective. I recognize that the cats weren’t chaotic. They were dancing to a song I composed and choreographed. To my chagrin, I realized I was the cat whispered who did not like how I was whispering to those cats! When I understood that I choose the song and the steps to the dance, the chaos once defined as raw deal became an opportunity.

Look at your frenzied cats. Let’s call them catalysts or triggers. How are you inviting the chaos of self-defeating triggers? How are those triggers manifesting in your life? Name the catalysts that stimulate the chaotic patterns. Once aware, you break the patterns.

You rewrite your script and move from a place of seemingly endless chaos to one of limitless possibilities. Those frenzied cats will always be in our lives. We can choose to see those cats as raw deals or as opportunities for growth.

Name those catalysts, befriend them, teach them your new song. As your song spirals from you, it twines into the hearts of others becoming a calming influence throughout world.

These Times Are A Changing

These Times they are a changing…what are they changing? Us — me & you!

We are in a wonderfully amazing, fiercely terrifying, possibility-filled time. Yeah, there are times that I jump past the wonder and amazement through the possibility and right into fierce terror. These times might be chaotic, but do I really need to get caught in the snare of my fear?

With that question, I mentally/

emotionally back up to get a clear image of what is happening. I remind myself that this is my wisdom year. It is not every year I celebrate my croning! This is my year to explore the wonder, breathe deeply into my core, and exhale wisdom into the moment. There are times when I feel that I didn’t get the message about being the wisdom keeper that I shared with everyone else.

Then I remember that shenpa is part of each of our journeys. This is the word that Buddhists use for what catches us. I ask myself, “What catches you?” The answer is simpler than getting untangled from the result! When I am not aware, the list of triggers to my reactions is endless. When I am aware, I can see those snares and sidestep them.

So, ask yourself: “what catches me?” If you aren’t quite certain, spend time paying attention to what is triggering you. There are no wrong answers to this question. Each answer echoes in what is impacting you in the moment.

Why is identifying your shenpa important? If I have learned nothing in the past six decades, it is that I need to identify what catches me before I can go forward.  Unless we — you and I — identify the stuff that lures us into a sticky web of reactions then we are going to continue to walk right into it.

What is that thing that catches you? Name it. Then do a deep dive to the root. You might discover an aggravation, anger, fear, or something totally different. To neutralize the shenpa, you’ve got to name it! That naming starts at the root where you eradicate the tangle of shenpa.

Mindfulness — being aware in the moment stops you from getting caught in shenpa and reacting. In those moments that you just are not present and get caught, don’t beat yourself up! Afterward find a time of silence. Reflect. Identify what tangles you. Remember, knowledge is power. Power helps you to navigate what catches you in the moment. That navigation leads to a life of transformation.

So, these times are a changing. I hope that you and I are changing in ways that make us more resilient and aware.

A Wild Ride Into The Question

This current ride is wild. Honestly? I am not a roller coaster kind of gal. The dips and turns. Wow! It seems we are living in a time where the good, the bad, and the ugly…all happen simultaneously. There are times when I get so caught up in the melee that I just have to disconnect less I get mired in despair or just overwhelmed by everything.

How did we get to this place? How do we get out? Those questions overwhelm me until I remember that to answer any question, I need to calm and centered into myself. Only when I am calm, can I hear a gentle voice rising from my core. It tells me that I am not asking the right question. “So, what is the right question,” I ask?

Focusing my attention on the voice, I hear three questions:

    • How am I being impacted?
    • How am I called to be?
    • What is my learning/takeaway?

How am I being impacted?

To discover the answer: Breathe deep into what you are experiencing. Find the calm at your core. Choose one thread to focus on. It can be something that personally impacts you or something that impacts the greater world. Listen to what your body, mind, spirit, and heart/emotions say to you. You don’t have to have all the answers, just get an initial impression of how you are impacted.

How am I called to be?

Take what you gleaned from the first question. Name what you noticed. Identify what catches you. If you need to dive deeper into the first question, do so. Come to an understanding of how you are called to be. Then ask, “How am I being called?” Or, “What is the one thing that I can do to make a difference in my life or in the life of others?” Create a plan to act!

What has changed inside of me?

Ask yourself, “How does the experience of understanding change me? What is new in the knowing about myself?” Take what has changed inside of you and find ways to integrate it into your being.

Life is all about asking the right questions and being courageous enough to live into the answers.

An Inside Job

We recognize that ultimately we can only change our self and, in doing so, become a change agent whose actions are transformative. Vanessa F Hurst

Change — one of those quotes I hear way too much is be the change you wish to see in the world by Mahatmas Gandhi. I wonder if there is another quote we can substitute for this one? Okay, I can her the wheels of outrage turning, but, seriously! You got to admit that it is an overused quote.

Now I can hear you say, what quote about change do you like, Van? To which I answer, one that doesn’t have the word change in it. To mollify those who thought I was dissing Gandhi, I’ll even reference another quote of his: my life is my message

Much like our message, change is an inside job. Our goal isn’t to impact out there. Our message is an internal response that is reflected when we walk our talk.  Think about this. It’s monumental. Our message is rooted at our core by identifying our talk

Have you ever asked yourself: what are my beliefs and how do I live grow from my core? Or, how is my inside job reflected into the world? And, how is my life a message of change that I share with the world?

I don’t know about you, but lately with everything happening out there, I feel my circle of influence shrinking. I feel like I can’t impact change any where. I wonder if there is anything I can do to change myself much less the world. It is fatiguing to show up in a chaotic world. You know what? It seems that most people I speak with are feeling the same way.

Then I remind myself those words come from a  pessimistic heart. I back up. Take a deep breath. Remind myself that I only have to make minute changes in myself. To do this, I honestly look at my message.

I begin in reflection. What is my message? How am I living into it? What am I missing the mark on? I realize that I don’t have to have all the answers. Even one is a beginning toward living my message.

Next I introspect. I look deeply at my message — discern how I am sharing myself with the world. I look at what I’d like to live into but am not quite accomplishing. Now the hard part: is what I am missing even that important? There are no right answers for these questions; only what speaks to each of us in the moment. Each of us decide how we want to experience your message.

Now comes the hard part: integrating the message you decided upon into your experience. Remember: this can be a simple action once a day. Begin simple, stay the course, and your life will be your message.

My life; my message. Not to change what’s out there but to better understand my path and make life corrections that have me living my message into the world. I bet you want the same.

An Emotion Is Only An Emotion Until We Give It Power

There is a brightness in the world, a turning of perception. Can you feel it? I can. I am not sure what it means, but the world appears different — it pulses with opportunity. I feel change within each breath.

But, change is a tricky thing. Just when you are certain that every thing has slipped into place, you discover another piece of the change. As change realigns, the whole image of what you believe is happening shifts. Sometimes that realignment is really tough to move through.

What do you do in that moment? Do you give up? Plow through the unexpected? If you are like me, you spend a long moment filled becoming almost overwhelmed by the frustration of plans thwarted. Then, after allowing the frustration to rise up and then slid off your being — you know, let it ride its course — I get back onto the new path of change.

Let’s back up. How does frustration run its course? For me, it  begins with identifying the feeling. Saying to myself, “I am frustrated!” Although it is really hard, I need to find a way to be okay with the frustration. An emotion is only an emotion until we give it power over us. So, I don’t cling to the frustration. I am objective about it. I don’t make it any more of a part of me than the passing emotion it is.

I notice the emotion while not judging it as good or bad or not-this-again! I don’t defend my right to be frustrated. I just notice the frustration and how it is attempting to get its grappling hooks into me. In this noticing, I do not give the emotion any real energy. Yes, being objective is as hard as it sounds. Remember, this is about practice making our skills permanent not making our execution of these skills perfect.

For you see, when I identify the emotion instead of identifying with it, I no longer take it so personally. It is just another challenge on this journey of transformation. I curiously and objectively enter the change with all its twists and turns. My daring and courage propel me into exactly where I need to be.

Change is rarely straightforward. It is messy, uncertain. In the unknowing comes the power to be who I truly am — who you truly are. Feeling an emotion is about finessing it, learning from it, and using the power behind it to be the change. That is what is so desperately  needed in this world.

You Are The Change (Even When You Don't Know It)

Gandhi had it right: be the change you wish to see in the world. But, how do I/you do that? Another Gandhi quote sums up the path of transformation nicely: “my life is my message.” When each of us truly shares our message, lives with soul purpose, then we are the catalyst for powerful change.

Sometimes I want this change to happen overnight. Maybe you are just as impatient as me. Although radical, quick change is possible, that seldom happens. Change begins with a seed of awareness that is nurtured with each resolute drop of determination. Transformation is built upon the little things — the seeds of hope and acts of determination.

This time of year mimics the nurturing seeds of change. We are at the beginning of a growing season. Now is the time to plant seeds and then care for the fragility of life. The stance toward the first sprouts of change must be the same. Like those first fragile plants of spring, we don’t look at change poking through the soil of our soul and say, “phew, that was hard work, but I did it.” No, we know that the initial evidence of our movement into change is only the beginning.

We recognize that in order for change to “take,” it needs a firm foundation. We lay a foundation with our determination and joy. We celebrate those fragile sprouts of change. In this rejoicing, the roots of change grow deep into the soil of our being.

Not everything we sow brings about transformation of our true self. I have found that sometimes I sow seeds of change that don’t quite sync with who I am. That change just doesn’t reflect my soul purpose. Change begins with seeds of awareness. Course corrections happen when we recognize what is growing change and weeds of stagnation are sprouting in our garden.

This awareness is cultivated through reflection, introspection, and integration — what I call RI2. This three stop process helps us deepen our understanding of our message and how it is an agent for change in our self and the world.

We reflect upon what is happening. Introspect what we gleaned from our thoughts, words, and deeds. We come up with a plan to pull weeds from our garden and grow our change. That final step is integration. RI2 is about saying to those weeds, “This isn’t me. This isn’t the way that I want to live. I am willing to uproot what isn’t me so that who I am can fully grow.”

So, how do you do this? Let’s dig into RI2:

    • Reflection: this heart based activity empowers you to do a personal assessment. I like to call it fact finding gleaned from your thoughts and emotions. It is noticing without judgment or drawing conclusions.
    • Introspection: this activity connects what you have gathered in your heart with your head. During this time, you objectively assess the information that you gathered. You identify patterns. Name how what is happening that is in line with your soul purpose and identity what doesn’t sync with you. During this time, you ask yourself, what can I do differently? You make a plan to get back on the track of transformation.
    • Integration: this activity is the doing phase. You take what you’ve learned and integrate it into your life. It gets you back on track.

Note that RI2 is an ongoing practice. (Learn more about it in Engaging Compassion Through Intent and Action.) You may find that you need to tweak what you discovered and integrate what is more in sync with your. Maybe you plant a new seed or remove a stem that you thought would bring change.

RI2 gives you the information, the knowledge, the wisdom to choose what change you want to grow into your soul and share it with the world.

How will your message give birth to the change you wish to see in the world?

Change isn’t coming. Change is here.

Change isn’t coming. Change is here. A subtle shift in the wind. A lightness of being. A shiver down the spine. How will do you respond to its invitation? If you are afraid, that is totally okay. Because anytime there is change, there is fear. Maybe it is not change that we fear; it may be the fear of responding the right way.

Sometimes we focus so much on what might happen that we make change harder than what it is. We can make it simpler. When we center, connect to our core, and listen to the voice within, change is not so daunting. What is this inner voice that guides us through the morass of change? Our intuition.

We need our intuition now more than ever. We are in this wild, expansive time of transformation. Even when we do not actively pursue change, it weaves its way into our life. Change is inevitable. Lately,  my intuition is pinging — hints of change drop into my inbox, curious articles pop up on social medial, conversations with friends take unexpected turns.

My intuition is whispering, “Listen. Change isn’t coming. It is here.”

And, then, a bit cheekily, Change asks, “What are you going to do about me?”

Now that is the conundrum! I feel it the winds of change and my intuition riding upon them. Can you? If you are unsure if you are, a symptom of both include feeling out of sorts in one moment and, in the next, slipping easily into balance.

Life may seem like a roller coaster ride. How do we manage the dips and sudden turns? Through self care and self compassion. Because, really, intuition cannot grow without compassion.

Intuition is a guide to transformation at your core. Breathe deeply into the wonder that you are. Know that no matter where you find yourself, there is nothing wrong with where you are. Every moment, every thought, every word, every deed is all part of the journey.

Recognize that any fear you feel is just the old, your stasis, holding on tight in an effort to stay. But, nothing lasts forever — not the old, not this transition time, and not the new. We are constantly growing into our best, most authentic self.

Your role is to learn to ride that roller coaster with glee just because how could you not? Life is to be lived and enjoyed.

Back to self care and self compassion — the way to pamper yourself in the moment. Go for a walk, read a book, savor a piece of chocolate. This is your life. You decide what you will do! No matter what you choose, really engage in that moment. Be awake to every nuance. Perhaps you will even whisper to yourself, “Show me. I am listening.” And, trust that intuition is responding.

Now that you have soothed some of your ruffles and re-engaged your journey, set aside time to listen to the peace as it settles into your bones. Be alert for images, words, sounds, smells, tastes. What you hear speaks of the next steps you take on the path. These messages are intuitive navigators that help you learn lessons, meet challenges, and live with soul purpose.

Change is here. Pay attention to where you are called. Be wiling to explore as you reconnect to your core. Really engage the voice of intuition whenever, however, wherever it manifests. The more you listen and respond the greater your connection to your inner world.

Connecting to your intuition isn’t difficult. It is the magic of changing your consciousness at will. And, in that magic you find the way to navigate through the moments of uncertainty into lasting change. Change isn’t coming. It is here. How do you respond?

A-Get-Back-On-Track Month: February

Hush. Listen. The world is coming alive. So are you. The Goddess Brigid. Imbolc. Candlemas. St. Blaise. February begins with a bright flash of light drawing our attention, guiding us home to our self.

The brilliance of illumination lights your world. Like a flash of lightning across the terrain you can see the path clearly — the way and the obstacles. So, what do you do? Do you burrow into yourself throwing the cover over your head or do you take those tentative first steps into the light of who you are?

I have found that the small steps, not the grand gestures, bring me closer to a goal. It is really the small, sometimes seemingly inconsequential actions that awaken intuition. I clearly hear the messages that call me into the next step. But, this listening requires that you peel back those hidey-hole layers, climb out of the burrow, and take those first tentative steps on the path. This is not for the faint hearted. Courage and daring are both needed on your path of purpose.

How do you take steps down this path? First, decide what you want. What is your focus in the short term? Maybe you want to be healthier, write a book, deepen a relationship, secure a new job. Remember this is your dream. There is no wrong way to achieve it…just choose. You can always revise the path to your dream!

Get quiet, breathe into the moment, ask the questions: “What is my dream? Where do I begin in this moment to attain that dream?” Listen to the answers.

Some examples of what you might hear:

    • You may say, “I want to get healthier.” In answer, maybe you begin by taking a sugar sabbatical for a week. Do away with all the overt processed sugar — candy, baked goods, etc.
    • You may say, “I want to write a book.” You begin by writing a thesis statement about the subject followed by writing a first draft outline for the book.

These initial steps are only the beginning of your journey to dream realization. Each step gives you the impetus to go deeper. As you take those tentative steps, listen to where your intuitive guides you. The external light is not the guide; it awakener of your inner wisdom.

As you listen to your intuition, be prepared to take the next step and the next step and the next step until you are dancing through your life with purpose. Who know what your dance will look like — one step forward, slide to the right or maybe to the left, sashay forward, one step back, spin, dip.  Who knows where your dance partner intuition will lead? When intuition is involved, wherever you go is sure to be in the direction of your soul purpose!

Leaning into the light from within is about coming awake to your dreams through intuition isn’t about succeeding in every moment of every day. It is about responding by listening to your intuition, navigating through your life challenges, and somehow, somewhere along the way living your purpose in the big and small moments.

So, February is a month where we begin with a flash of light and see the light grow noticeably longer as we edge into spring. Like the growing year, we can edge deeper into an awareness of who we are and live from that  knowing.
