All You Need Is Love

 …a not so trite blog

What is love? Is it really all you need? I answered those questions — or at least asked the questions and discovered a few answers — as I developed my March Bellarmine University class: All You Need Is Love.

Love is…

Instead of love being affection or desire, let’s see love as allowing someone to be themself. Caring for someone unconditionally. Giving them the room, the opportunity to grow into themself.  This is a paradigm shift in which love as unconditional takes on a whole new meaning.

At our core is a spark of love. The origin of our spark of love, is the creator, the sacred. That spark at our core flares a connection of love across the abyss to the Sacred, the All Spark as it were. When we ignite the spark at our core, a highway of connections is made visible — between our self, the sacred, others, and all of creation. Moving along this highway, we give and receive an infinite supply of love.

We need this love

The world is a wild, fierce, beautifully uncertain place where we get bombarded with so much stuff. We get fatigued. Sometimes the last thing we want to do is love — our self, another, creation. When we are at our lowest, we remember that love is an energizer. When we consciously and intentionally share love, hope blossoms. Barriers break down. Silos dismantle. We connect to others.

Love is the great transformer. Its energy ignites our forgiveness. It turns our attention to suffering. Wakens our compassionate heart. Shines the light into the shadows of possibility. Makes the world is a better place.

Love is a game changer

Love is not for the timid. It asks us to move out of our shell, beyond our comfort zone. To courageously live in a world that is not perfect. Not nirvana. Not heaven on earth. By igniting the spark of love, we fully engage life understanding that we are in a great classroom not of chosen lessons but of challenges and surprises that call us to be our best self. We show up as our best self by choosing love.

Each time we choose to be an igniter of love, a receptacle of love, a sharer of love, our perception shifts. We see past our judgments, into the heart of another, the heart of a situation, the heart of our self. We feel the woundedness of the world and know that the greatest healing power is love. When we see life in this way, when we act from this knowing, life is never the same.

Love propels our leap across the chasm

That chasm is just an illusion that separates us from our life work. That work?  To share love with one another. Unconditionally, compassionately, truthfully. This is not the love of enabling but the love that holds each of us to our highest self. And, that is what we are called to do over and over again.

As I love dearly and completely,  I realize that love is all there is. Wanna live a life where love is all there is? Wanna join the love squad? I dare you. I double dare you to join me in a world where love is all there is.

You. Are. Loved.

I. Am. Loved. Say those words. Let them flow over your being. Feel them sink into your soul. Allow them to resonate in your body.

I. Am. Loved. Let the sweet nectar of those words flavor burst inside of your. Breathe in the wonder, the joy, the grace of those words. Awaken to the beauty at your core.

I. Am. Loved. Believe it. Be it. Know it without a doubt.

Doesn’t it feel wonderful to know — to feel in the marrow of your being that you are loved? I know that when I feel loved, the world shifts. It becomes brighter. I feel lighter. And, I admit that accepting that knowing is one of the most difficult things that I do. Sometimes it is hard to really believe that I am loved with that intensity. That I am loved unconditionally.

Maybe you are one of the lucky ones who has never experienced that moment of doubt about being. Maybe you have always recognized the love that surrounds you. Maybe you have always known deep at your core that being loved is a right not a privilege. If so, can you teach us how to make the leap across the chasm of self doubt into self acceptance?

Because with self acceptance come possibility. We recognize that all things are possible with love. So, when love wraps me in her warm embrace and I hug her back, the struggles aren’t so tough. In fact, they fall away. I not only have a place in the world, but love reminds me that most of all, I belong to myself. Love reminds me that I am worthy and incredible things are waiting for me to accept them. With love I take my place in this world of enough.

I. Am. Loved. Three radical words that bring with them self acceptance. That are the light that brings you ever closer to recognizing that you am not becoming anything. You am exactly who you need  to be in this moment. And, that is awesome.

Painting Joy into Your World

Believe it or not, in this uncertain world artisans of joy are flourishing. They do this not through the illusion that all is well, but through living from freedom, solitude, and love.

Let’s begin with the blank canvas of freedom. This is not the freedom of doing whatever we want whenever we want. No, this is the freedom of choice through discernment. We begin with the realization that life is not always fair, the world is uncertain, and each of us is imperfect. The is a potent recipe for disaster averted through discernment. (Discernment is the process of objectively reaching understanding through reflection and introspection.

Through discernment we wade through the swampiness of uncertainty to find the hidden sparks of truth. Courageously blowing upon these sparks, our freedom burns bright. Within this freedom, we respond with love and compassion to whatever life gives us. This doesn’t mean that everything is wonderful. It means that while life might be tough, we find the wonder and grace in each moment.

Finding wonder and grace may feel elusive until we rest in silence. This is not a cessation of physical noise. Within this place we notice the busy-ness within our mind and quiet it. We enter a place of clarity. In these moments of solitude we see clearly, weigh our options, and make choices. Without resting in the quiet, our internal monologue distracts us. Within the clutter, we would have no freedom. We can clear the clutter and gain freedom. With freedom and solitude, no matter what we choose, we act with love.

We discern how we are called to be love in a world that is uncertain and populated with people who are imperfect — just like us. The goal is to love our self for who we are while forgiving our self for the many ways our imperfections present. In loving our self in full acknowledgement of our imperfections, we gain the ability to love others despite their imperfections.

Through this boundless, unconditional love, we suffuse our self and the world with joy. Ask yourself what choice you freely make today. Rest in the quiet of your heart, identify the roots of your choice. It doesn’t matter how you judge the choice — good or bad — dig deep into the roots to understand why you made this choice. Use your internal spark to burn away the illusions that have you trapped. Recommit to being/doing from the depth of your soul. Love with a purity of heart.

Key into how you feel. Full body listen. Connect to that which raises your energy vibration. As your energy raises, ride the wave of this energy — joy. Be it. Share it. Do it. Joy is the only thing that will coax us from the dark of uncertainty into the light of our true self.
