Falling into New

Life changes in an instant, but mostly change happens bit by bit. The old erodes leaving us with potential for growing new. But, change is uncertain. We are not assured of the outcome of anything. We are only certain that things will not continue as they are as the capacity for change grows.

I have often said that it is not change that it hard but the thought of change. Years ago I rode the log ride at an amusement park. The log shaped canoe meandered around the water tube until it reached a conveyor belt. Inch by slow inch the best drew the boat nearer to the top of a great fall. The thought of change, for me, is like the tottering of that boat before it tipped into the plunge toward the water below.

Those moments before the excitement of the plunge perfectly describe the anticipation of change. When the externals are shifting so rapidly, we may get stuck in what is happening instead of noticing how our life changes with each thought, each word, and each action. In fact, we may make choices not fully aware of their ramifications.

Sometimes I feel very small when I recognize all the change going on around me to other people — new jobs, new relationships, deaths, births. Then I examine what is happening on a communal level — locally, nationally, globally. The changes that impact me are staggering. What is even more staggering? The feelings of a lack of control over that impact.

Change marches on with or without our consent. So, what can I do? What can you do? The answer to both is found within our ability to be a change agent. When we are an entrepreneurial change discerner, we do not change for the sake of change; rather, we adapt and grow and become who we are meant to be because we cannot help but sing in harmony with the song of change. Singing our song forth we use the impetus of change to realize our soul purpose. In doing so, our thoughts, words, and actions resonate soul purpose.

Change asks each of us to be flexible, find ways to live with purpose no matter however, wherever, whenever, and whoever we find our self. Change reminds us that while life is not always easy, it provides challenges and lessons for us to live with soul purpose.

Writing Your Story: The Power of The Reframe

Have you ever found yourself midway through a book and the temptation was so great you flipped to those last pages to discover the ending? I have.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I find myself wishing I could scurry ahead a chapter or two in my life to discover how this subplot I am living is resolved. But, then, I have to remind myself, there is to skipping ahead. Life is to be lived moment by moment.

No matter how uncertain our circumstances, no matter how glaring the imperfections we discover, somehow we must call upon the courage and the strength to live in each moment. In the moment, we commit to carefully wading our way through the challenges. In doing so, we learn our life lessons and live our soul purpose.

The power of the reframe — to see our challenges and life lessons as opportunities for growth — cannot be emphasized enough. Through the reframe, we choose to live in the moment no matter how gritty and pain-filled. Within this reframe life becomes less a minefield of uncertainty waiting to explode by a seeming misstep and all about opportunity for growth and transformation.

We accept that while we may not be able to change the externals, we are not living a preordained life plot. With curiosity and daring we choose the next arc in our story. Choice is the power that resonates behind the plot we find our self living. With awareness we see how our thoughts, words, and actions have brought us to this moment. We recognize the skills we have gained along the way. We use those skills to resolve our imperfections and live fully amid the uncertainty.

By seeing the world differently, and noticing the shift in our reactions and responses to it, our paradigm shifts. We are no longer a passive reader who wants to skip ahead to the end. No, we are the writer of our own story. We choose how we respond amid the constraints within our life. In a sense, we accept that we cannot control anything but our response to the externals. Our story truly becomes an inside job.

This willingness to navigate the wonderful uncertainty with joy and compassion is our power. Our end goal does not happen some where in the murky future but in every moment that we act with courage by sharing the message of our life.

The Energy of Fear: Power vs. Force

I know that you are scared, so am I. We cannot give in to the force of our fear. To do so is to cause minute cracks in our being. Unchecked the force of fear can overwhelm us, shattering us into shards. But, there is a power in our fear that cannot be denied. That power must be harvested with courage for real change to occur.

Power. Force. Let’s star with definitions based upon the words of Mirriam-Webster:
    • Power — the ability to act or produce an effect; mental or moral efficacy; to give impetus to
    • Force — compulsion or constraint acted in such a way to do violence; to break open

Let’s tweak the definitions:
    • Power is a response that wells from the core of who you are. It is a shout from our authentic self that echoes our courageous self.
    • Force is an overwhelming reaction that fills us with an inability to move through illusion and doubt. Unchecked it shatters us into shards.

It is key to harness the power of your fear so to minimize its destructive force. This begins with acknowledgement of how fear is speaking through your body, mind, and emotions. Name how it is stressfully impacting your body. While you may not fully understand the depth of fear, you can acknowledge its voice. To acknowledge the voice is to reduce the intensity of fear’s symptoms.

Next, be aware of your propensity to respond or react. Name how you use the power of courage to respond. Identify how you get tangled in the force of your fear. Don’t despair when you react. Remind yourself that fear based reaction is a natural byproduct of living. We get scared every day. Sometimes it is so small that we don’t even notice our fear or the subsequent reaction.

Have compassion when you get twisted in fear. To shame yourself is to drive fear deeper into the well of your being. Recognize that you are human. Know that without fear you would not birth courageous response. Celebrate each moment that you harness the courageous power of fear.

There is no fear without the opportunity for courage. Courage speaks through moments of fear. It gives you the impetus to move through a challenging time into your true self. Start by having a conversation with courage. No matter how quiet, how timid its voice, listen to the words of courage. Decide how, with courage’s guidance, you can kindle the flame of your power. The gesture does not have to be grand; any spark of courage is enough.

Respond with your power. This can be as simple as a mindfulness practice of breathing through your fear or it can be having a difficult conversation with someone. It can be an act that takes you out of your comfort zone. A courageous response can be present in an infinite number of actions. It may be grand or humble. No matter how you express it, your actions echo with the power of who you are.

Fear is uncomfortable, inevitable, powerful. It is a wake up call to continue the great quest of soul. Will it wake the tangling of fear vines that cause minute cracks in your being or will it propel you to the heights of your true self? Only you can know that answer and respond with courage and compassion.
