Navigating through the Transition Time: Imperfect in an Uncertain World

As the world slowly settles into this new normal, have you asked yourself about the impact on yourself of this transition time? How is your body, mind, spirit, and heart (emotions) managing all the uncertainty? Maybe things have shifted so subtly that you haven’t notices or perhaps there have been symptoms and signs you can no longer ignore.

No matter what, this transition time has left a mark on each of us. They may manifest in our body, our mind, our heart (emotions), or our spirit. The symptoms and signs present themselves uniquely in each of us. What have you noticed?

Mentally: Has your Ladder of Inference got a workout? (The Ladder of Inference is how our beliefs power our assumptions and judgments. The result is our responses and reactions.) Mine has. I have noticed more and more how my beliefs inform my judgments and assumptions and the ways that they manifest in my actions. I have had some uncomfortable but enlightening conversations with myself. My beliefs have shifted as I open myself to the views and beliefs of others.

Emotionally: During this time of transition what is your emotional state? Mine seems to have been scattered to the four corners of my being. This uncertainty is hard on the emotional life. For with uncertainty comes fears. Identify the fears is necessary to release paralysis. Reframing is vital to navigating the uncertainty. To reframe: Find the good, the beneficial, in any situation. Doing this gives each of us the power to try anew again and again and again until the fear no longer paralyzes us.

Spiritually: How do we make sense of what is happening? So much raw emotions is percolating and often boils over. I wonder how we can find our way into a world where the Golden Rule is the only response. To create a world that is governed by the Golden Rule, we return to our self. Internal transformation is the only birther of external change. This is a time for us to live from our beliefs — share our core message and invite others to share theirs.

Physically: If we have ignored the messages from our first three aspects, they converge and speak from the physical. It is difficult to ignore the mental, emotional, and spiritual murmurs that become physical shouts. There is a lot of heavy weight in this world that targets the physical. That realization came when little aches became big, and I admitted that I was not handling the uncertainty as well as I thought.

I dialogued with the first three aspects to identify what was happening. Only when I had this open, honest conversation with myself, could I consciously and intentionally name the fears and reframe where I am. This gave me the power to navigate through this time of transition. I didn’t have to know where I was going; I needed to be aware of what was unsettling me along the path and be open to the next step.

We are holistic beings. Our body, mind, spirit, and heart speak to us in every moment. They alert us to the potential of imbalance. By living with awareness, we acknowledge the little and big ways that we are impacted. Each aspect empowers us to minimize anything detrimental and accentuate the best in each of us. Because #inthistogether begins by keeping one’s self together.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel

Peering down a darkened tunnel, a  pinprick of light shines. Step by step I edge closer until it becomes a light so bright that I am temporarily blinded. Eventually my sight returns; my vision shifts. With new eyes, I recognize that light at the end of the tunnel. It isn’t out there; it emanates from the core of my being.

Imagine that. The light that teases us, beckons us forward is us. Its rays are intuitive messages that whisper, “Be yourself.” And, then it provides hints how to reconnect to who we truly are. Within the light is the power to be our self; the power to transform; the power to shed the darkness of doubt and illusion.

Perhaps you are doubting that you have that light of potential within you. Trust me. It is present within each of us. It ignites with each formed thought, each uttered word, and each relayed action. It can also be tamped by a thought, a word, or an action. Mindfulness is key. Transformation comes as we foster our connection to the light though our awareness. We listen to its message and respond.

But, first, we accept that we are the light. How does your life change when you know that you have the capacity to shed light on difficulties, obstacles, barriers — those things that prevent you from realizing you soul purpose? Through this light opportunities are revealed. Your life shifts when you realize that this brilliant light reflects your truth.

Accepting this premise, that we are the change in our life, is not for the faint hearted. In fact, it isn’t even the end of the tunnel. We don’t suddenly realize this and transform. Within this acceptance we gain the courage to take the next step and the next and the next. With each step, we become more curious about what that journey offers and more daring in how we respond to those offerings.

You may be asking, “How do I begin?” Feel, with all your senses, your inherent goodness. Remind yourself that you are enough. Name what ignites your light. Identify what tamps it down. Open yourself to the message that flickers in the light. Act with courage, curiosity, and daring. Know that no matter the outcome each step is a success. Bathe in the light that makes you whole. Own who you are.

Compassion: Igniter of Fires

Last weekend I facilitated a discussion focusing on current events and and what Thomas Merton would say about them. By the fourth session, the participants warmed to the idea and brainstormed some creative ways of living.

One theme of the day was that we need to stop living on moral outrage and stand in our own power. We need to act. And, while it is fine to take personal responsibility, we are not responsible for the actions of others. One important realization is that we may be unable to change the behavior of others or even mitigate the outcomes of their actions. We are only in control of our actions.

We can look at the external works and say that what is occurring is a reflection of our internal turmoil, and it may be. But, sometimes what is happening has nothing to do with us. Sometimes the uncertainty in the world reflects in us glinting off kindling in our soul creating a fire in our heart.

In the combustion of our sacred spark we are startled from our blindness and wake to the world’s uncertainty. Unable to return to inertia, we ask, what can we do? How can we make a difference? Those answers are found on the path of compassion. As we trod upon this path, we lno longer judging, ignoring injustices, or get stuck in the quagmire of “I cannot do anything to impact change.” We are compassion’s presence.

Compassion, at times, is not always easy, but it is most definitely necessary. With it, we root out the malignancy of the world and create a safe space for all to thrive. We begin by acknowledging our own imperfections. Through learning from them, we connect to our true self. Authentic, we do what we can to alleviate suffering. This means loving no matter what; loving enough to walk through suffering as difficult lessons are learned.

When is the world reflecting our imperfections and when is it igniting a fire inside of us? That is for each of us to discern as we navigate through the quagmire to recognize the difference. Once we know how the world is reflecting itself we are able to ignite flames of transformation of our self and others.

Perhaps that is what Merton would say, and what I would encourage each of you to do. Don’t take on the uncertainty of the world. Own your imperfections. Leave the imperfections of others to them. Learn to recognize the difference. Share your message with the world through each compassionate  act. Be the light in a darkened world.
